When Gucci set out to develop her first-ever formulations for Westman Atelier, she felt just as passionate about what wasn’t inside each little bottle as what was. “As a professional makeup artist, I’ve always found silicones to be annoying,” she says of the popular cosmetic ingredient, which is regularly used in skincare and makeup to provide a smooth glide and silky texture.

While many cosmetic-grade silicones are considered safe, “they sit on the skin rather than absorbing into it,” says Gucci, who dislikes their surface sensation. “Plus, they tend to pill when you layer them with other cosmetic products, which is a makeup artist’s worst nightmare.” 

There’s also the fact that certain “cyclic” silicones are questionable on an environmental level.  The European Union recently implemented a ban on D5 and D6 silicones in cosmetics, meaning they’ll be phased out in anything above 0.1% concentrations by mid-2027. (D4 silicone has been prohibited in cosmetics since 2019 in the EU.)   “These silicones don’t biodegrade,” explains Gucci, meaning they wash down drains and bioaccumulate in aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems. 

From day one—starting with Skin Activator Serum—Gucci has worked closely with the lab to find clean ingredient alternatives that deliver a luxurious nourishing texture while also calming and treating skin.   To get it right, Gucci partnered with Korea’s leading skincare scientist, Dr. Raymond Park, to develop an advanced delivery system that keeps ingredients stable and targeted.

“All those beautiful ingredients can really absorb into the skin and are delivered in the right concentrations, so they work,” says Gucci, who also brought silicone-free innovation to our Eye Activator and Suprême C serum formulas.
